Jamer Hunt hosts Glass House Conversations

This week on Glass House Conversations, we welcome Jamer Hunt as host. Jamer is the Director of the MFA Program in Transdisciplinary Design at the New School in New York and also leads Big + Tall Design, a practice that combines conceptual, collaborative and communication design. He is the founder of DesignPhiladelphia, an initiative that frames the city as a lab for innovative design projects, and has collaborated on and co-hosted several design symposiums, including “MIND08: The Design and the Elastic Mind” sponsored by MoMA and SEED magazine and “Headspace: On Scent as Design in 2010.” Jamer recently participated in the Winterhouse Symposium on Design and Social Change.

Jamer’s question for Glass House Conversations addresses the subject of metrics and social design: “Design is very slippery when it comes to ‘measuring’ participation and effectiveness, and yet this kind of assessment is central to understanding the impact of what we make, build, produce, and put out into the world. It also is a critical tool for seeking grant funding and government support from organizations like the National Endowment for the Arts. How would you measure the social impact of design if you needed to quantify its value in fostering change? Is it visits to historic buildings? Reading a well-designed magazine? Designing low-income housing units? Using a Michael Graves tea kettle from Target every morning to make tea? Redesigning a ballot? How would you measure the social impact of design in your everyday life?

The conversation is off to a lively start, with respondents citing a wide range of references, from Heidegger to Raymond Loewy to IKEA. We invite you to add your comments and examples! This conversation runs through 8pm EST on Friday at http://glasshouseconversations.org
